Micron reported fiscal third quarter revenue of $41.456 billion against its own guidance midpoint of $33.5 billion, a $7.96 billion overshoot on a forecast the company set one quarter earlier.
The rest of that outlook table missed in the same direction. Gross margin landed at 84.6 percent on a GAAP basis against approximately 81 percent guided, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share came in at $25.11 against a guide of $19.15 plus or minus $0.40. Operating expenses went the other way, at $1.738 billion GAAP against approximately $1.60 billion guided, $138 million above plan.
Management's framing points elsewhere. "Micron’s record fiscal Q3 financial results and even stronger outlook for Q4 reflect the strategic value of memory in the AI era," said Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology. Strategic value is carrying a lot of weight in that sentence. Revenue rose 73.7 percent sequentially from $23.86 billion while operating expenses rose 7.3 percent, and gross margin moved 10.2 points from 74.4 percent. Volume growth does not produce that shape on its own; price and mix do.
The split between the two is not answerable from this document. The release carries no bit-shipment figure and no HBM revenue split. Neither did the previous quarter's release, so this is not a disclosure Micron has withdrawn; it is one the earnings release has never made.
A business unit table is new, and it reports revenue and margin rather than volume. Core Data Center revenue reached $11.524 billion at an 87 percent gross margin, against $1.530 billion at 38 percent in the year-ago quarter. Cloud Memory, the larger of the two at $13.769 billion, ran at 83 percent. Investments in capital expenditures, net, were $7.1 billion for the quarter and adjusted free cash flow was $18.3 billion.
The release subtitles itself "Micron executes transformational Strategic Customer Agreements", and Mehrotra returns to the phrase: "We believe our multi-year Strategic Customer Agreements will significantly enhance the durability and predictability of Micron’s strong financial performance." Those are the only two appearances of the term in the document. No counterparty is named, no volume, no term length and no pricing mechanism, and the phrase appears nowhere in the prior quarter's release, so a specialist reading for what changed structurally has a label and nothing under it.
For the fourth quarter, Micron has guided revenue to $50.0 billion plus or minus $1.0 billion at approximately 86 percent gross margin, which would be a further 20.6 percent sequential step on slightly better margin. The last guide was 24 percent low. Nothing in this release separates the price curve from the capacity behind it, and until a bit number appears, nothing will.
Bootnote: the framing is recycled. Micron's second quarter release ran under the subtitle "Record results and outlook reflect strategic value of memory in AI era", and the chief executive's third quarter quote arrives at the same phrase by a slightly different road. Two record quarters, one sentence.
