Caterpillar Takes 2 GW Gas Genset Order for AIP’s Monarch AI Campus in West Virginia

Caterpillar has taken an order for 2 gigawatts of fast-response natural gas generator sets from American Intelligence & Power Corporation, with deliveries scheduled from September 2026 through August 2027. The sets will run behind the meter at Monarch Compute Campus, AIP Corp's flagship site in West Virginia, paired with battery energy storage. Power delivery begins in 2026, with the full 2 GW online in 2027.

The purchase agreement sits inside a strategic alliance announced by AIP Corp, Caterpillar and Boyd CAT, the Caterpillar dealer serving West Virginia, Kentucky, southern Indiana and southeastern Ohio. No contract value was disclosed. The companies also did not say how many units make up the 2 GW, nor did they name a data center customer for the campus.

Equipment for the first phase is the G3516 fast-response natural gas platform. Caterpillar says it can ramp from zero to full load in approximately seven seconds, which is the specification that decides whether onsite generation can follow an AI cluster's load swings without help. The engines carry selective catalytic reduction for emissions control, and the release states the installation is designed to comply with all relevant air permitting requirements.

"This collaboration reflects Caterpillar and our dealers' continued focus on supporting customers that require primary, continuous-duty power at scale through our broad energy solutions portfolio," said Melissa Busen, senior vice president of Electric Power, Caterpillar. Continuous duty is the operative phrase. These are not standby sets waiting for a grid outage, they are the primary supply, which changes the maintenance interval, the fuel contract and the spare parts position an operator has to carry.

Monarch is described as a fully self-supplied, behind-the-meter platform that generates power onsite and needs no incremental utility transmission or distribution to serve its load. AIP Corp puts the site's target at 8 GW of planned generation capacity and says it holds an existing microgrid designation from the State of West Virginia. The company states the design will not increase rates or add costs for existing utility customers, a claim that rests on the campus never drawing from the utility system rather than on any published tariff analysis.

"Our design is purpose-built for AI data center operations, combining fast-response natural gas generation with battery energy storage to manage rapid load variability and deliver consistent power quality at scale," said Daniel J. Shapiro, CEO of American Intelligence & Power Corp. The release gives no sizing for the battery systems, no vendor for them and no ride-through duration, which are the numbers an engineer would need to judge how much of the load swing the storage absorbs before the engines respond.

Financing is part of the package. The alliance includes vendor equipment financing through Caterpillar Financial, subject to customary terms and conditions and phased to match equipment delivery, and it sets a framework covering equipment optimisation, expansion planning, operations and maintenance strategy, and parts support planning.

For buyers weighing onsite generation against an interconnection queue, the useful figures here are the seven-second ramp, the September 2026 delivery start and the presence of dealer-backed service through Boyd CAT. What remains unknown is the cost per megawatt, the fuel supply arrangement and the emissions permit status, and none of those can be assessed until the companies publish them.
